Recharging groundwater in Jaffna, Sri Lanka to meet the increased demand for water

The Jaffna peninsula in Sri Lanka is characterized by lack of fresh groundwater due to the depletion of groundwater levels, lack of rainfall, and changes in rainfall patterns over time. Though there has not been a significant decrease in the total population in Jaffna, the demand for water for agricultural and domestic purposes has increased. Farmers rely on groundwater, through pumping which largely contributes to groundwater depletion thus creating tremendous pressure on water suppliers to fulfil the water demand UNICEF Sri Lanka, in collaboration with partner organizations developed and implemented a Managed Aquifer Recharge (MAR) initiative with the participation of communities in 12 GN divisions in the Jaffna district to save water and meet the increased demand.
